Signs the motor has been sending you
Symptoms have normally been mounting for some time before the light ever shows. Late news, in other words:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
- economy that is worse than before
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under acceleration
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not conclusive. It is a fair bet the filter is full once the light is showing too.
The explanation diesel particulate filters block near Southcott
