Before the light, what the car was telling you
Late news, the light. The symptoms generally grow for some time before it shows:
- less power, especially pulling uphill
- you see the revs stop short of where they once went
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- the stop/start without a word bowing out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration
That is not proof alone. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
What blocks diesel particulate filters round South Shian
Being a coastal area, South Shian produces precisely the driving a DPF copes with worst. The school run to the local primary school, A828 at a halt at half past eight, five minutes to Port Appin Stores & PO, the dash to Connel Ferry — none of it goes on long enough or is hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. Where a clean is not the solution

- sensors, pressure or temperature, reporting a block that is not real
- an EGR valve held open
- an AdBlue system fault
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration running in the first place
- turbo failure, with oil getting into the filter
The first check is there for just that. If one of those proves the fault, you find out about it at the outset rather than once the money has changed hands already.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter gutted fails its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no solution. What gets searched for as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your filter is treated in place and goes back into work.
