By the time the light appears, things have normally been going wrong for a while. It is late news:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- you find the revs stop short of where they once went
- the fuel economy is down
- the stop/start silently packing in
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the box
Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. Alongside the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
