Slack, West Yorkshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Cleaning the DPF is done at the car, not at a body shop. No body shop, no filter leaving. A fitter comes to your address over in Slack, clears the diesel particulate filter in place, performs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you started with.

You'll have a figure by phone before anyone goes, the clean opening from £299, and the visit lasting typically around 2 hours.

The light is showing and the car is down on power — that is how we usually come across people, and what this page is about.

The DPF light is on. What next?

The unit is not necessarily what is at fault, and that goes first. Treatment is not where a visit starts. A scan is — a number of faults appear as the same warning.

It tells what you do with the vehicle between now and the visit.

  • Car still driving normally on an amber light — attempt a long constant run first. It costs nothing at all and often shifts the filter without a visit.
  • Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not touch it. The window has gone.
  • Get it looked at rather than running it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the throttle, has gone past the long-run stage.

Signs the car has been giving you

Last news, the light. The symptoms generally build for weeks before it shows:

  • power tailing off, above all pulling uphill
  • you see the revs fall short of where they always went
  • fuel use that is worse than before
  • a stop/start that has meekly given up
  • the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on

By itself, none of that is conclusive. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.

The cause diesel particulate filters choke round Slack

Slack is a village, and the motoring that goes with one is the least kind kind for a DPF. A regeneration takes long enough and heat, and has not much: not on the school run to Colden Junior and Infant School, not on Widdop Road at half past eight, not on five minutes to Co-op Food, and not on the dash to Hebden Bridge. What should burn off stays put.

Geography does not assist either. The M62 is under 10 miles from Slack and Bradford is under 15 miles away, so unless something carries you out that way regularly, whole weeks pass without the sustained run that would clear the filter alone.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration gives out

Limp mode is the vehicle protecting itself. A sustained drive works by triggering a regeneration, and that is just what limp mode prevents: power limited, revs kept low, no regeneration possible.

So the common advice to run it up the motorway is sound advice, right until it is not. Once the motor is in limp mode you are past that stage, and the filter wants treatment rather than more driving.

DPF cleaning at the vehicle in Slack

Nothing is taken from the vehicle. That catches out people. The DPF sits fitted where it is and the work happens around it, on a driveway, in a works car park, anywhere it can stand for two hours or so.

First a check. Live ECU data, the soot load as a proportion and as a weight, the sensor readings, the glow plugs, the associated components — all of it logged before anything is cleaned.

A cleaning solution next is fed in through the entry point on that motor, expanding inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never budge. Heavily blocked filters sometimes need a second pass.

Next, a regeneration burns off everything the clean freed. Ride along with the vehicle and it turns into a monitored drive out of Slack. Park it and the regeneration goes in place, with running data verified once it is done.

Both reports are sent by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second scan is what confirms the change, clears the light and notes whatever is still showing.

What a DPF clean will not touch

Only one fault is fixed by treatment: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does little for:

  • the wrong signal from a pressure or temperature sensor
  • an EGR valve stuck open
  • AdBlue system failures
  • a regeneration that never runs, because of glow plugs or injectors
  • a turbo putting oil through the filter

Which is why the diagnostic goes first. When one of those turns out to be the fault, you find out about it in advance rather than once the money has left for good.

Two more worth knowing. Getting the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a working DPF fails its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your own filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.

What DPF cleaning costs in Slack

A call-out charge applies whatever the outcome, and covers the visit, the booking fee, the check and the advice given. Cleaning itself opens from £299.

Naming a flat rate would not be honest. We fix it by phone, once the motor and its expected needs are clear. The vehicle shifts it, and so does the postcode — Slack, Colden, or a spot otherwise out in the HX postcode area.

You are not billed for cleaning that the scan says will not work. What nonetheless applies is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the scan was run and the advice was given.

A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the clean, and that includes an engineer travelling back out to Slack if the light comes back inside the time.

Where we travel around Slack, and what we clean

One on-site service spans cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs, plant and construction machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is done in place rather than moved anywhere.

Technicians are along Widdop Road most weeks, so Slack is seldom a special trip, and the same run covers Colden, Mytholm and the villages out past Heptonstall. Coverage reaches UK-wide, so even further out through West Yorkshire is nonetheless worth a phone call, and what settles between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

Slack itself

Slack is a small village in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 317 metres. Slack is located in a scenic area, with the city of Bradford nearby and London around 175 miles to the south.

Questions Slack drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Can I just take it for a long drive?
Sometimes, if you catch it in time and the car has not slipped into limp mode. That requires motorway speed for a steady spell, rather than a brief trip to Co-op Food.
The visit runs how long?
Expect typically around 2 hours — severely clogged filters sometimes need a second pass, which extends it.
What does it cost around Slack?
The call-out charge covers the visit, the check and the advice; the clean itself opens from £299. Settling it is done by phone, since what you drive and where you live both move the number.
Have I got to be around?
Space for the motor to sit, for a couple of hours, is all that is wanted. Not you. The regeneration can be carried out as a supervised drive if you would rather ride along.
Travelling to Slack — how soon?
That hangs on the calendar, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ring 0303 330 1830 what is open across the HX area.
Is the filter taken off the car?
Not on the mobile service — it is done where it sits. We do not take filters off or bolt them back on, whichever way.
Suppose the light reappears?
The 30-day warranty covers aftercare, including an engineer heading back to Slack.
