The light is last news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have normally been mounting for a while:
- power dropping away, particularly going uphill
- you see the revs never reach where they used to go
- worse fuel economy
- the stop/start without a word packing in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
That is not evidence alone. With the light with them, the filter is a fair guess.

The ECU is read first, giving soot load by percentage and by weight, along with a review of sensor readings, glow plugs and associated parts, so nothing is touched while another fault is still open.
A cleaning fluid after that is injected through the access point on that vehicle, spreading inside the filter to loosen soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never shift. Heavily loaded filters sometimes require a second pass.

- the wrong signal from a temperature or pressure sensor
- EGR valves that hang open
- an AdBlue system fault
- injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration completing at all
- turbo trouble, with oil reaching the filter
The first diagnostic is there for exactly that. Transpiring to be one of them means hearing it before the work gets going, not after handing over for it.
DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is exchanged: the filter you already own is cleared where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it hollowed out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth noting.
