Symptoms have generally been building for weeks before the light ever appears. Last news, in other words:
- climbing uphill, the power tails off
- an engine whose revs will not rise as they should
- economy that is worse than it was
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
On its own, none of that is conclusive. With the light beside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Blocked diesel particulate filters round Skullomie, and the cause

Two things more worth noting. Getting the filter cut out is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is treated in place and sent back into use.
