Skinidin, Highland: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With mobile DPF cleaning, we drive out to the car. A fitter comes at your door over in Skinidin, treats the diesel particulate filter while it is fitted to the car, performs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you arrived with.
Nobody travels until the figure is fixed over the phone. The visit lasts typically around 2 hours and the clean opens from £299.
Most drivers find us with the light on already, and the vehicle down on power. That is the position this page is written for.
The DPF light is on. What then?
First thing: it is not necessarily the unit. A diagnostic happens before any treatment, because that same panel light has a number of candidate faults behind it.
Second thing: how you run it between now and then matters.
- Worth a go before you ring anything: amber light, vehicle driving fine, just one even run, no charge.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has already gone.
- A diesel smell in there, or black smoke under the throttle, is the stage to stop booking long drives and ring.
The car has been telling you already
The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been building for weeks:
- power tailing off, above all pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as before
- fuel consumption getting worse
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
None of that is proof on its own. With the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
Blocked diesel particulate filters around Skinidin, and the reason
For a DPF, the worst use is the kind you meet across a coastal area such as Skinidin. Not one bit of it lasts long enough or is hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, Skinidin Road barely moving at half past eight, a few minutes to the local shops, the hop to the nearest station. Unburnt soot that should burn away builds up instead.
Geography does not oblige either. The M8 is over 50 miles from Skinidin and Inverness is over 50 miles away, so unless something carries you out that way routinely, weeks slip past without the sustained run that could scour the filter by itself.
The point a DPF regeneration can no longer happen
Limp mode is the motor looking after itself. The real catch is that a long drive works by triggering a regeneration, and once in limp mode the revs will not climb and power is limited.
Sensible advice, that motorway run — right up until the moment it is not. Past that stage — limp mode — road work will not be enough, and the filter wants a clean.
The car stays in place for on-site DPF cleaning in Skinidin
The filter does not leave it. That is the part most people do not expect: the job happens with the DPF even now fixed to the car, on your drive, in a work car park, any place the vehicle can wait for a couple of hours.
First a scan. Live ECU data, the soot load as a percentage and as a mass, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the related components — all of it taken before a thing is started.
Then the clean. A cleaning fluid is injected through the access port on that vehicle and opens out inside the filter, freeing the soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never budge. Badly clogged filters sometimes need a second pass.
What the clean has loosened is then cleared by a regeneration. Ride along with the car and it turns into a monitored drive out of Skinidin. Leave it and the regeneration runs statically, with live data checked once it is done.
Then a second check, confirming the change, resetting the warning light and noting anything still outstanding. Both reports are sent over, so the before and after figures are kept.
The problems a DPF clean cannot cure
Treatment cures one thing: a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- sensors, pressure, reporting a block that is not real
- an EGR valve held open
- a fault in the AdBlue system
- injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration starting at all
- a turbo putting oil through the filter
Finding that out is the first check's job. You are let know before the work begins, not after you have settled up, if it turns out to be one of those.
Cutting the filter out is not a solution: without a functioning DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the wording people look up, though nothing is replaced — your existing filter is treated in place and sent back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
Figures for DPF cleaning in Skinidin
The cleaning begins from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the scan and the advice that comes with it.
Once we are told what you own, and roughly what the filter will want, the number gets settled by phone. A single price for all would not be straight. Two things change it: what you run, and where you are — Skinidin itself, over at Colbost, or farther out within the IV postcode area.
Where the diagnostic says cleaning will not do it, you are not charged for cleaning. The call-out charge even so holds, because the visit, the check and the advice have taken place.
A 30-day warranty includes aftercare on the job, and that includes an engineer heading back out to Skinidin if the light comes back inside the period.
They service was really good and I really liked how they explained everything to me so that I made sense to me as well.
The engineer was very happy and explained the whole process in plain English and performed the dpf clean expertly and efficiently would recommend them to anyone.
Dan and trainee Sam came along sorted out the car, got it from trapped on the drive to back on the road in under 1hr and 30 mins. Also highlighted some issues that needed fixing unrelated to the initial problem and gave some after care advice!
Where we reach around Skinidin, and what we clean
Whatever it is — car, panel van, light commercial, heavy goods vehicle, plant, construction machinery, agricultural vehicle — the same mobile service holds, and the filter never departs it.
The same run that keeps engineers on Skinidin Road most weeks covers Skinidin, Colbost, Dunvegan and the villages beyond Lonmore. Phone anyway from further out across Highland. Coverage reaches UK-wide, and the day you are offered comes down to the calendar rather than how far away you are.

What Skinidin drivers want to know about DPF cleaning
- Will a long drive sort it?
- Soon enough, and with the car out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. Fifteen minutes to the local shops and back will not do it; motorway speed, sustained for a stretch, will.
- The visit lasts how long?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a severely loaded filter can need cleaning twice, which runs on.
- Across Skinidin, what does it cost?
- It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the scan and the advice. Pricing is done by phone, since what you drive and where you live both change the price.
- Is it necessary for me to be there?
- The motor needs a spot for two hours or so. You need not be in it. The regeneration can be carried out as a watched drive if you would sooner come along.
- Coming to Skinidin — how soon?
- Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is typical. Ring 0303 330 1830 and you will know what is open across the IV area.
- Will the filter be removed?
- On the mobile service, no: the filter is cleaned in place. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.
- And if the light reappears?
- The 30-day warranty covers aftercare, including an engineer coming back to Skinidin.
