Six Bells, Blaenau Gwent: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Treating the DPF happens at the car, not at a body shop. The technician arrives at your place in Six Bells and starts. The diesel particulate filter is cleared fitted to the car, a DPF regeneration runs after it, and you hold on to the filter you started with.

The visit takes typically around 2 hours, the clean starts from £299, and the figure is agreed on the phone before anyone travels.

Most owners find us with the light on already, and the vehicle low on power. That is the situation this page is meant for.

The DPF light is on. What now?

It may not be the DPF at all. That is the main thing. Cleaning is not where a visit starts. A scan is — plenty of faults show up as the same signal.

It matters what you get with the vehicle between now and the visit.

  • A long steady run may even now do it, provided the light is amber and the car goes as normal. Costs nothing at all, so attempt that before ringing.
  • That window has closed once the car has slipped into limp mode. Driving will not get there now.
  • Get it looked at rather than driving it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.

Before the light, what the motor was showing you

The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been growing for some time:

  • power tailing off, above all going uphill
  • you find the revs never reach where they used to go
  • the fuel use is worse
  • a stop/start that has meekly packed in
  • the cabin smelling of diesel, or smoke when you press on

Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair assumption.

The reason diesel particulate filters clog round Six Bells

For a DPF, the worst use is the sort you get across a residential suburb such as Six Bells. A regeneration needs time and heat, and sees neither: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on Eastville Road at the morning rush, not on a few minutes to Tesco, and not on the run to Llanhilleth. What should clear remains.

The map does not oblige either. The M4 is under 10 miles from Six Bells and Newport is under 15 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way routinely, whole weeks pass without the long steady run that would clear the filter on its own.

Why limp mode stops a DPF regeneration

It is self-defence: that is all limp mode amounts to. A long drive works by setting off a regeneration, and that is exactly what limp mode blocks: power capped, revs pinned, no regeneration possible.

The common advice — run it up the motorway — is sound, until it is not. Past that stage — limp mode — driving will not manage it, and the filter needs cleaning.

On-site DPF cleaning where the vehicle stands across Six Bells

Most drivers do not see coming this bit: the filter stays on. The job is done with the DPF even now fixed to the car — on your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the motor can stand for a while.

The ECU is taken first, giving soot load by percent and by mass, along with a look over of sensor readings, glow plugs and related hardware, so nothing is started while another fault is still possible.

Then the clean. A cleaning solution goes in through the entry point on that motor and spreads inside the filter, freeing the soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never shift. A second pass is sometimes called for on badly loaded filters.

Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has loosened. Either it is done as a monitored drive out of Six Bells, with you there, or it goes where the vehicle waits and the running data is checked once done.

Both sets of figures go over by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second check is what verifies the change, puts out the light and logs whatever is still open.

When a DPF clean is not the answer

A filter blocked with soot and ash is the one thing cleaning answers. It will not reach:

  • the wrong signal from a pressure or temperature sensor
  • the EGR valve jammed open
  • an AdBlue system fault
  • failed glow plugs or injectors, so no regeneration ever starts
  • turbo failure, with oil reaching the filter

Which is why the scan happens first. Turning out to be one of them means hearing it before any work gets going, not after settling up for it.

Cutting the filter out is not a fix: without a functioning DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the phrase people type in, though nothing is replaced — your original filter is cleared in place and returned into use. Two more worth noting.

The cost of DPF cleaning in Six Bells

The clean begins from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and covers the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that goes with it.

The price is settled by the phone, once we know the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. No flat rate could be honest. What you run and where you are both change it: Six Bells itself, over at Pant y Pwdyn, or farther out in the NP postcode area.

You are not asked to pay for cleaning that the check says will not help. What nonetheless stands is the call-out charge, since the visit took place, the scan was run and the advice was offered.

Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer comes back to Six Bells.

The vehicles we clean and the patch we take in around Six Bells

The filter is done on the vehicle on all of them: cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, construction and plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is moved anywhere.

Technicians are along Eastville Road week in week out, so Six Bells is rarely a journey of its own, and the same run picks up Pant y Pwdyn, St Illtyd and the spots out past Abertillery. Coverage is UK-wide, so even further out through Blaenau Gwent is still worth a ring, and what picks between today and tomorrow is the diary rather than the distance.

Common questions on DPF cleaning around Six Bells

Does a long run shift it?
Sometimes, if you catch it early and the car has not dropped into limp mode. That requires motorway speed for a sustained run, rather than a short trip to Tesco.
About how long does it last?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly blocked filter can require cleaning twice, which adds time.
Price around Six Bells — what is it?
Starting from £299, with a charge for coming out that covers the diagnostic and advice on what to do next. Settling it is done by phone, since what you drive and where you are both shift the price.
Do I have to be present?
The vehicle needs a spot for two hours or so. You do not need to be in it. If you would sooner come along, the regeneration can be run as a supervised drive instead.
Coming to Six Bells — how soon?
Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is normal. Phone 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what is available across the NP area.
The filter — does it come away from the vehicle?
On the on-site service, no: the filter is treated in place. And neither does getting a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
Suppose the light comes back?
Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Six Bells.
