What to try when the DPF light shows
The filter is not necessarily what is to blame, and that leads. A diagnostic happens before any treatment, because that same dashboard light has a number of likely faults behind it.

- Worth a go before you call anything: amber light, vehicle driving normally, just one constant run, no charge.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not shift it. The window has shut.

Before the light, what the vehicle was showing you
Symptoms have normally been building for weeks before the light so much as shows. Late news, in other words:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as before
- fuel use getting worse
- stop/start without a word giving up
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in there
Alone, none of that is evidence. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.

Being an area, Sillyearn generates just the use a DPF handles least well. Run through a normal week: the local primary school and home again, A95 at a standstill before nine, a quick trip to Tesco, a hop to Keith. Not much there lasts long enough or gets hot enough to complete a regeneration. Instead of burning off, the unburnt soot builds up.

Then the treatment. A cleaning solution is fed in through the access port on that vehicle and opens out inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never budge. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to need doing twice.
What the clean has loosened is then cleared by a regeneration. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of Sillyearn; if not, statically where the vehicle stands, with the running data verified afterwards.

What a DPF clean will not fix

- an EGR valve stuck open

- the turbo putting oil into the filter

DPF renewal is what people search for, but no part is swapped: the filter you own is cleared where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it gutted a fix, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth knowing.
