By the time the light shows, things have usually been deteriorating for some time. It is belated news:
- falling off on power, above all uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they once did

- silently, the stop/start packs in
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
