The vehicle has been warning you already
Belated news, the light. The symptoms usually build for some time before it shows:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- you see the revs fall short of where they used to go
- worse fuel consumption
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under acceleration
Any one of those, taken singly, is not evidence. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
What blocks diesel particulate filters near Shiremoor

Two things more worth knowing. Leaving the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a working DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your own filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.
