Not the DPF, always. Main thing to get straight. That light can follow several faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a diagnostic and not with treatment.
Second thing: how you drive it between now and then counts.
- Worth a go before you call anything: amber light, car driving normally, just one even run, no cost.
- Motor already gone into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not shift it now.
- Get it seen to rather than using it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
The car has been showing you already
The light is last news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have normally been building for a while:
- power dropping away, especially going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- worse fuel consumption
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
Any one of those, taken singly, is not evidence. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
Why diesel particulate filters block round Shaws
Shaws is a residential suburb, and the driving that goes with one is the poorest type for a DPF. Nothing of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration: the school run to St Chad's Church of England Primary School, Birch Road standing at half past eight, a few minutes to Tesco, the hop to Greenfield.
