The car has been telling you already
Symptoms have usually been growing for a while before the light ever appears. Late news, in other words:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they always went
- the fuel use is poorer
- a stop/start that has meekly given up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
On its own, none of that is proof. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
