Before the light, what the vehicle was showing you
The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have generally been building for some time:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before
- economy that is worse than it was
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under hard acceleration
That is not proof by itself. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair bet.
