Mobile DPF Cleaner

Scottas, Highland: Mobile DPF Cleaning

With on-site DPF cleaning, we drive out to the car. No workshop, no filter going anywhere. A technician drives out to your address over in Scottas, treats the diesel particulate filter as it sits, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you arrived with.

You'll have a number by phone before anyone leaves, the clean starting from £299, and the visit lasting typically around 2 hours.

Written for the position most owners are in: the light on already, the motor starved for power, and the visit still to arrange.

The DPF light is on. What now?

The filter is not always what is to blame, and that leads. A scan happens before all work, because that same dash light has several likely faults behind it.

It counts what you manage with the car between now and the booking.

  • A long constant run may yet do it, provided the light is amber and the vehicle runs normally. Costs zero, so have a go at that before booking.
  • Motor already gone into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not touch it now.
  • Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop planning long drives and get it seen to.

What the car has been warning you

By the time the light shows, things have normally been going wrong for some time. It is late news:

  • less power, especially climbing uphill
  • the revs no longer climb the way they always did
  • worse fuel consumption
  • stop/start quietly giving up
  • diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears

None of that is proof on its own. Alongside the light, it is a fair bet the filter is full.

Why diesel particulate filters clog near Scottas

The day-to-day driving that comes with a coastal area like Scottas is the poorest sort for a DPF. Think about a typical week: the local primary school and home again, Blaven View at a crawl before nine, a short hop to The Co-operative Food, a dash to Mallaig. Not much there goes on long enough or runs hot enough to complete a regeneration. What should burn off remains.

The M8 stands over 50 miles from Scottas, Inverness over 50 miles away, and unless something carries you out that way regularly, full weeks slip past without the sustained run that clears a DPF. Geography does not assist.

Why limp mode stops a DPF regeneration

What limp mode means is the motor protecting itself. With output limited and the revs pinned, the regeneration the filter requires can never happen at all. That tells, because setting off one is precisely what a sustained run does.

Sound advice, that motorway run — up until the day it is not. Once the car is in limp mode you are past that line, and the filter wants treatment rather than road work.

Where the car stands is where the DPF is done round Scottas

On your drive, in a work car park, wherever the vehicle can sit for a while: the job takes place with the filter yet bolted on, which is the part most owners do not expect.

First a check. Live ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a mass, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the related components — all of it taken before any of it is started.

Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never budge are loosened next, by a cleaning solution put through the entry point on that motor, which opens out inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to need doing twice.

A regeneration is next, burning off what the clean has freed. Stay with the motor and it turns into a monitored drive out of Scottas. Leave it and the regeneration runs statically, with live data verified once it is done.

Finally the scan runs again — the change verified, the light reset, anything still outstanding logged. Both sets of figures come to you by email, so the numbers are on record.

When a DPF clean is not the solution

One thing is what a clean fixes — a filter choked with soot and ash. It does little for:

  • the wrong reading from a temperature sensor
  • an EGR valve held open
  • a fault in the AdBlue system
  • a regeneration that hardly ever starts, because of glow plugs or injectors
  • the turbo putting oil into the filter

Finding that out is the first scan's purpose. When one of those proves the fault, you learn of it at the outset rather than once the money has gone altogether.

A couple more worth knowing. Leaving the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your existing filter is cleaned in place and returned into use.

The cost for DPF cleaning around Scottas

Every visit carries a call-out charge — travelling to you, making the booking, running the scan and passing on the advice. The clean itself begins from £299.

Publishing a flat rate would not be straight. We settle it over phone, once the motor and its expected needs are established. Two separate things shift it: what you own, and where you are — Scottas itself, across at Sandaig, or further out across the PH postcode area.

Where the diagnostic says cleaning will not help, you are not charged for a clean. Because the visit, the check and the advice have taken place, the call-out charge even so holds.

A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the clean, and that includes an engineer heading back out to Scottas if the light returns inside the window.

Rang them and they came out the same day, done a deep clean on the dpf, so will have to see if it has worked.

Professional service. Sorted the problem out left me a breakdown of potential problems on the vehicle so pre-emptying future issues. Thank you.

Phillip M.

Brilliant! Spoke to someone on the phone and they had availability next day to get me booked in! The issue was solved in a timely manner and I got sent a report detailing everything. Great company! Would defo recommend!

Where we get to near Scottas, and what we clean

Whatever it is — estate, van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, agricultural machine — the one mobile service stands, and the filter never quits it.

Technicians are along Blaven View week in week out, so Scottas is seldom a journey of its own, and the same run takes in Sandaig, Mallaigmore and the places out past Inverie. It is the diary, not the distance, that settles whether it is this day or the next, and coverage reaches UK-wide — so ring even from even further out around Highland.

Questions Scottas drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Will a long drive shift it?
Sometimes, if you spot it in time and the vehicle has not dropped into limp mode. That means motorway speed for a sustained run, rather than a quick trip to The Co-operative Food.
How long does the visit last?
It is typically around 2 hours. A severely loaded filter can take a second clean, which lengthens that.
Price in Scottas — what is it?
A clean begins from £299, and the call-out charge on top covers the visit, the scan and the advice. Both the vehicle and where you are move it, which is why pricing goes by phone.
Have I need to be around?
Somewhere for the vehicle to wait, for a couple of hours, is all that is required. Not you. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be carried out as a supervised drive instead.
When can someone come to Scottas?
Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is normal. Ring 0303 330 1830 and you will know what is open across the PH area.
Is the filter removed from the car?
On the on-site service, no: the filter is cleaned in place. Nor does lifting a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
What if the light returns?
Taken in by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Scottas.
