Saltrens, Devon: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Treating the DPF is done at the car, not at a workshop. No workshop, no filter leaving. A technician comes to your place across Saltrens, cleans the diesel particulate filter in place, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you arrived with.
You'll know a figure by phone before anyone goes, the clean opening from £299, and the visit taking typically around 2 hours.
Written for the position most owners are in: the light on already, the vehicle short for power, and the clean still to arrange.
DPF light on? What happens next
The DPF is not automatically what is wrong, and that goes first. Several faults put the very same light on the identical dashboard, which is why a visit begins with a scan rather than with cleaning.
It matters what you manage with the motor between now and the booking.
- Amber light, motor even now driving normally — a long constant run can still clear it alone. Costs nothing, and worth attempting before you book anything.
- Motor already gone into limp mode — that window has closed. A drive will not reach it now.
- Stop planning long drives and get it looked at if the interior reeks of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.
The vehicle has been showing you already
Late news, the light. The symptoms usually build for some time before it arrives:
- tailing off on power, especially uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they once went
- worse fuel consumption
- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- the interior reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
By itself, none of that is evidence. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is there too.
What blocks diesel particulate filters around Saltrens
Saltrens is a small village, and the motoring that goes with one is the worst type for a DPF. Look at a typical week: Monkleigh Primary School and back, A388 at a standstill before the hour, a quick trip to Buckland Brewer Community Shop, a run to Chapleton. Nothing there runs long enough or gets hot enough to finish a regeneration. What should burn off stays put.
Geography does not assist either. The M5 is under 50 miles from Saltrens and Exeter is under 50 miles away, so unless something takes you out that way regularly, whole weeks pass without the long steady run that might scour the filter by itself.
Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working
What limp mode comes down to is the car defending itself. Pulling power is limited, the revs will not climb, and the regeneration the filter needs can not happen — which is the entire catch, because a long drive works by setting off that regeneration.
Taking it up the motorway is the standard advice, and it holds as far as a line. Once the motor is in limp mode you are the far side of that line, and the filter wants treatment rather than more driving.
Where the motor stands is where the DPF is cleaned across Saltrens
The filter does not come off. That is the bit most people do not expect: the job takes place with the DPF still bolted to the car, on your front, in a work car park, wherever the motor can wait for a couple of hours.
First a check. Running ECU data, the soot load as a percentage and as a weight, the sensors, the glow plugs, the associated hardware — all of it logged before any of it is cleaned.
Then the treatment. A cleaning fluid is fed in through the access port on that motor and spreads inside the filter, lifting the soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never shift. A second pass is sometimes needed on heavily blocked filters.
Next, a regeneration clears everything the clean loosened. That is a monitored drive out of Saltrens if you are along, or a static regeneration where the vehicle sits, with the running data verified once done.
Both read-outs are sent by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second diagnostic is what verifies the change, resets the light and lists whatever is still open.
What a DPF clean will not fix
Only one fault is fixed by a clean: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does little for:
- the wrong signal from a temperature or pressure sensor
- an EGR valve jammed open
- the AdBlue system going wrong
- a regeneration that never completes, because of glow plugs or injectors
- turbo problems, with oil entering the filter
Finding that out is the first check's whole job. Turning out to be one of them means finding out it before the work begins, not after handing over anything.
Hollowing the filter out is not a remedy: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the phrase people look up, though nothing is exchanged — your original filter is cleared in place and put back into use. Two more worth noting.
DPF cleaning costs across Saltrens
A clean opens from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it takes in the call-out, the booking, the diagnostics and the advice.
Publishing a flat rate would not be honest. We settle it by phone, once the car and its likely needs are established. What you run and where you are both shift it: Saltrens itself, across at Monkleigh, or otherwise out across the EX postcode area.
You are not asked to pay for treatment that the diagnostic says will not work. Because the visit, the check and the advice have taken place, the call-out charge still stands.
The clean carries a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer coming back out to Saltrens if the light comes back inside that period.
Brilliant! Rang at 7:30 and they called me back at 8:05 without any voicemail from me. Came in the afternoon and sorted within 2 hours. Great team members dave and his colleague who explained everything to me.
Zoltan arrived as expected and got on with job, no time wasting. Whatever he did has worked and the fault has been rectified. A nice young man a credit to your company.
Excellent work by the technician (Dave) and his trainee. Great result and done so quickly. Very polite and knowledgeable gents. Would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of using this service. Thanks guys.
Vehicles we clean, and where we travel around Saltrens
Whatever it is — car, light van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, agricultural machine — the same on-site service stands, and the filter never quits it.
Our engineers are along A388 most weeks, so Saltrens is seldom a special trip, and the same run takes in Monkleigh, Hallspill and the villages out past Weare Giffard. Coverage runs UK-wide, so even further out across Devon is even so worth a phone call, and what picks between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.
Saltrens itself
Saltrens is a small locality in inland Devon, situated approximately 91 metres above sea level. Saltrens lies near the villages of Monkleigh and Weare Giffard, and is part of a wider rural area that includes Frithelstock. Saltrens is characterised by its detached housing and relatively small population of around 362 residents, with the city of Exeter located about 34 miles away.
What Saltrens drivers wonder about DPF cleaning
- Can I merely take it for a long drive?
- It can, provided you get it early enough and limp mode has not begun. A sustained run at motorway speed is what it wants — not five minutes or so to Buckland Brewer Community Shop and back.
- Does the visit take long?
- Reckon on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean extending that where the filter is heavily loaded.
- Across Saltrens, what does it cost?
- Opening from £299, with a charge for the call-out that pays for the diagnostic and advice on what to do next. Quoting is done by phone, since what you own and where you live both move the price.
- Do I have to be present?
- A spot for the vehicle to sit, for a couple of hours, is all that is needed. Not you. The regeneration can be done as a monitored drive if you would rather be there.
- How soon can someone come to Saltrens?
- That comes down to the schedule, but it is often same-day or next-day. One phone call to 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what the EX area has open.
- Does the filter come away from the car?
- Not on the call-out service — it is treated where it is. Taking a filter off or putting one back on come to anything a job we do either way.
- The light reappears — then what?
- An engineer comes back out to Saltrens — the 30-day warranty includes aftercare.
