The car has been telling you already
Symptoms have usually been growing for weeks before the light even appears. Last news, in other words:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- revs that will not rise the way they once did
- the fuel economy is worse
- stop/start silently bowing out
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the box
By itself, none of that is evidence. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
