Signs the motor has been giving you
By the time the light appears, things have normally been deteriorating for a while. It is belated news:

- stop/start without a word bowing out
- the interior reeking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. The light alongside them indicates a loaded filter.

A couple more worth knowing. Having the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is cleared in place and returned into use.
