The unit is not automatically what is to blame, and that goes first. A check comes before all cleaning, because that same panel light has a number of candidate faults behind it.

- Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not touch it. The window has closed.

The car has been telling you already
Symptoms have generally been growing for some time before the light ever appears. Belated news, in other words:
- less power, above all climbing uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they used to
- worse fuel economy
- stop/start without a word giving up
- the interior stinking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
None of that is proof by itself. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.
