Signs the car has been sending you
Symptoms have normally been growing for some time before the light even shows. Late news, in other words:
- power tailing off, particularly pulling uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they once went
- worse fuel use
- a stop/start that has quietly given up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gears
On its own, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
The cause diesel particulate filters choke around Riverside
