Your DPF light is on — what next?
First thing: it is not necessarily the unit. That light can arise from several faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a check and not with a clean.
Second thing: how you handle it between now and then makes a difference.
- A long constant run may still be enough, provided the light is amber and the vehicle goes fine. Costs nothing, so attempt that before ringing.
- A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has by then gone.
- Get it seen to rather than using it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on the throttle, has gone well past the long-run stage.
The vehicle has been telling you already
The light is last news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been growing for weeks:
- less power, particularly going uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they once did
- fuel consumption turning worse
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under acceleration
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
Why diesel particulate filters choke near Ringwell
Being a coastal village, Ringwell produces just the motoring a DPF handles worst. A regeneration needs the time and heat, and sees neither: not on the school run to Devoran School, not on Bissoe Road at half eight, not on five minutes to Costcutter, and not on the run to Perranwell. What should burn off stays behind.
Unless you have a standing need to drive out to the M5, over 50 miles from Ringwell, or over to Truro under 5 miles away, weeks pass without a sustained run. Geography is no help.
The point a DPF regeneration can no longer complete
Limp mode is the vehicle looking after itself. The entire problem is that a sustained drive works by starting a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not rise and power is limited.
Taking it up the motorway is the usual advice, and it stands right up to a line. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are the far side of that line, and the filter requires cleaning rather than more driving.
Where the motor stands is where the DPF is done in Ringwell
Nothing is taken from the vehicle. That catches out people. The DPF remains bolted where it is and the work goes on around it, on a drive, in a works car park, anywhere it can wait for a couple of hours.
A check comes first — live data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by mass, and a check of the sensor readings, glow plugs and associated components, so other faults are eliminated before a thing is started.
A cleaning solution then is injected through the entry point on that car, expanding inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never shift. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to take doing twice.
Next, a regeneration clears everything the clean lifted. Either it is done as a monitored drive out of Ringwell, with you there, or it runs where the vehicle stands and the running data is checked afterwards.
Then a second check, proving the change, putting out the warning light and listing anything still logged. Both read-outs are emailed, so the before and after figures are recorded.
Where treatment is not the answer
A clean answers one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does little for:
- pressure or temperature sensors showing a block that is not there
- EGR valves that hang open
- an AdBlue system problem
- a regeneration that simply never completes, because of glow plugs or injectors
- turbo trouble, with oil reaching the filter
Which is why the check happens first. Proving to be one of them means finding out it before work gets going, not after paying a penny.
Cutting the filter out is not a solution: without a working DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the term people look up, though nothing is exchanged — your own filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use. Two more worth noting.

You are not billed for a clean that the scan says will not work. What still holds is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the check was done and the advice was given.
