By the time the light shows, things have normally been deteriorating for some time. It is last news:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- revs that will not climb the way they always did
- fuel use going worse
- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under acceleration
None of that is evidence on its own. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
