By the time the light arrives, things have usually been going wrong for some time. It is belated news:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as before
- fuel economy getting worse
- a stop/start that has quietly given up
- the car smelling of diesel, or smoke when you press on
None of that is evidence on its own. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is there too.
