By the time the light shows, things have normally been deteriorating for some time. It is late news:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- you find the revs never reach where they used to go
- fuel use that is worse than it was
- stop/start quietly bowing out
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears
None of that is proof on its own. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.
