The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been building for a while:

- you find the revs fall short of where they once went
- fuel use that is worse than it was
- stop/start quietly packing in
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears
Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
