Before the light, what the car was warning you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been mounting for weeks:
- falling off on power, above all uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- consumption that is worse than before
- quietly, the stop/start gives up
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. It is a fair guess the filter is full once the light is showing too.
