Mobile DPF Cleaning around Rattar and Highland

On-site DPF cleaning goes to the car. The technician arrives at your place over in Rattar and gets to work. The diesel particulate filter is cleaned still on the motor, a DPF regeneration comes next, and you end up with the filter you started with.

The visit runs typically around 2 hours, the clean starts from £299, and the figure is agreed on the phone before anyone travels.

If the light is already on and the vehicle is down on power, this page is for you. That is how most drivers get to us.

What to check when the DPF light is on

First thing: it is not always the DPF. A diagnostic goes before any cleaning, because that same dash light has a number of likely faults behind it.

Second thing: how you drive it between now and then counts.

  • A long constant run may yet manage it, provided the light is amber and the car drives as normal. Costs zero, so attempt that before calling.
  • Once the vehicle is in limp mode, motoring will not touch it. The window has gone.
  • A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under acceleration, is the point to stop planning long drives and book it in.

The motor has been showing you already

By the time the light arrives, things have usually been slipping for a while. It is late news:

  • dropping away on power, especially uphill
  • an engine whose revs will not pull like they did
  • fuel consumption going worse
  • stop/start quietly giving up
  • the interior stinking of diesel, or smoke when you press on

That is not proof by itself. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is there too.

The reason diesel particulate filters choke near Rattar

For a DPF, the poorest driving is the kind you meet across a coastal area such as Rattar. The school run to the local primary school, Burn Road at a crawl at half past eight, five minutes to the local shops, the run to Thurso — not one bit of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. The soot that should clear builds up instead.

Neither is distant from Rattar: over 50 miles to the M90, over 50 miles to Inverness. Neither is on the way to anywhere most weeks, though, so the journey that would scour a filter simply never comes.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working

The motor is looking after itself, which is what limp mode is. With power held down and the revs held, the regeneration the filter needs will not complete at all. That matters, because triggering one is precisely what a long run does.

The common advice — take it up the motorway — is good, until it is not. The filter requires cleaning rather than more driving once the motor has dropped into limp mode.

DPF cleaning for a blocked filter across Rattar, Highland

The vehicle stays in place for on-site DPF cleaning round Rattar

On your front, in a work car park, anywhere the car can sit for a while: the job takes place with the filter yet bolted on, which is the part most drivers do not expect.

The ECU is read first, showing soot load by proportion and by mass, along with a look over of sensor readings, glow plugs and connected components, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still open.

A cleaning fluid after that goes in through the entry point on that motor, spreading inside the filter to loosen soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never move. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to require doing twice.

What the clean has loosened is then burned off by a regeneration. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Rattar; if not, in place where the car stands, with the real-time data read after.

Both reports go over by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second check is what confirms the change, resets the light and notes whatever is still outstanding.

When a DPF clean is not the answer

Only one fault is answered by cleaning: the filter clogged with ash and soot. It does no good for:

  • the wrong signal from a temperature sensor
  • a jammed EGR valve
  • a fault in the AdBlue system
  • injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration completing at all
  • a turbo pushing oil through the filter

Which is why the scan goes first. When it is found to be one of those, you are let know before any work begins rather than after you have settled up for it.

Gutting the filter out is not a remedy: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the phrase people look up, though nothing is swapped — your original filter is treated in place and sent back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.

Prices for DPF cleaning in Rattar

The cleaning opens from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the diagnostic and the advice that follows.

Once we know what you run, and broadly what the filter will need, the price gets settled by phone. A single price for everyone would not be truthful. What you run and where you are both shift it: Rattar itself, across at Mey, or farther out in the KW postcode area.

A clean that will not do it is not treatment you pay for, and the diagnostic is what says so. Because the visit, the check and the advice have happened, the call-out charge nonetheless holds.

Aftercare is covered by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer comes back to Rattar.

Fantastic service!!!!! Rung them and they came out the next day! Guy was fantastic and was only there just over an hour. would highly recommend.

Laura H.

Really good service. Everything explained clearly. Pointed out some other engine issues to check out which was very helpful. Expensive compared to other companies but with the 28 day warranty I felt happy to pay to get the best service. Couldn't fault the engineer he was excellent.

Siobhan P.

Nat arrived on time, super friendly and quickly reassured me that it was a blocked filter. Worked his magic, saved me from having to cancel work commitments. Highly recommend.

What we clean, and how far we go near Rattar

The filter is done in place on all of them: cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery, agricultural vehicles. Nothing is carried anywhere.

Our engineers are along Burn Road week in week out, so Rattar is seldom a journey of its own, and the same run takes in Mey, Corsback and the places out past Barrock. Coverage reaches UK-wide, so even further out through Highland is nonetheless worth a phone call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

What Rattar drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Can I just take it for a long drive?
Sometimes, if you catch it in time and the motor has not slipped into limp mode. Fifteen minutes to the local shops and back will not be enough; motorway speed, held for a stretch, will.
Does the visit run long?
It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily loaded filter can need a second clean, which adds to that.
What does it come to around Rattar?
It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge paying for the visit, the diagnostic and the advice. Both the vehicle and where you are move it, which is why quoting is done by phone.
Is it necessary for me to be there?
No. The car requires space to wait for a couple of hours; you do not need to stand with it. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be carried out as a watched drive instead.
When can someone come to Rattar?
Depending on the schedule, often same-day or next-day is normal. Ring 0303 330 1830 and we will let you what is open across the KW area.
The filter — does it leave the car?
It is done where it stands, on the call-out service. Neither job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.
Suppose the light comes back?
Taken in by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Rattar.
