The car has been telling you already
By the time the light shows, things have usually been deteriorating for a while. It is late news:
- less power, particularly climbing uphill
- you see the revs never reach where they always went
- worse fuel consumption
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
That is not proof on its own. With the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is blocked.
Why diesel particulate filters choke round Ramsey
