What the motor has been showing you
By the time the light appears, things have normally been deteriorating for a while. It is late news:
- power falling off, above all going uphill
- you notice the revs fall short of where they always went
- worse fuel use
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration
None of that is conclusive on its own. It is a fair guess the filter is full once the light is on as well.
What chokes diesel particulate filters around Quatt

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out will fail its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no fix. What gets looked up as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your filter is cleared in place and goes back into use.
