Mobile DPF Cleaning in Portishead, Somerset

Call-out DPF cleaning travels to the motor. No workshop, no filter going anywhere. A fitter drives out to your door in Portishead, treats the diesel particulate filter where it is, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.

You'll know a number by phone before anyone goes, the clean opening from £299, and the visit taking typically around 2 hours.

Written for the position most owners are in: the light showing, the vehicle struggling for power, and the clean still to book.

What to check when the DPF light is on

The filter is not automatically what is wrong, and that leads. A diagnostic comes before the work, because that same dashboard light has a number of possible faults behind it.

The driving you manage in the meantime matters. That is the other thing.

  • Car even now driving fine on an amber light — attempt a long steady run first. It costs nothing and regularly sorts the filter without a visit.
  • That window has closed once the car has dropped into limp mode. Driving will not help now.
  • Stop arranging long drives and get it checked if the interior stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.

Before the light, what the car was showing you

By the time the light shows, things have generally been going wrong for weeks. It is last news:

  • climbing uphill, the power tails off
  • an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
  • the fuel consumption is down
  • the stop/start without a word giving up
  • smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car

None of that is evidence on its own. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.

Why diesel particulate filters choke near Portishead

Portishead is a coastal town, and the driving that comes with one is the poorest sort for a DPF. Look at an ordinary week: Portishead Primary School and home, Wyndham Way at a crawl before half nine, a short hop to Waitrose, a hop to Avonmouth. Nothing there goes on long enough or runs hot enough to complete a regeneration. Instead of burning off, the soot banks up.

The M5 lies under 3 miles from Portishead, Bristol under 10 miles out, and unless something carries you out that way routinely, full weeks slip past without the long unbroken run that clears a DPF. Geography does not assist.

DPF regeneration, and the moment limp mode stops it

It is self-defence: that is all limp mode means. A sustained drive works by setting off a regeneration, and that is exactly what limp mode blocks: power limited, revs kept low, no regeneration available.

The usual advice — get it up the motorway — is sensible, up until it is not. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are past that point, and the filter requires a clean rather than more driving.

Call-out DPF cleaning where the car stands in Portishead

On your driveway, in a work car park, wherever the motor can wait for a couple of hours: the job is done with the filter yet fixed on, which is the part most owners do not anticipate.

A diagnostic comes first — real-time data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by actual weight, and a look over of the sensors, glow plugs and associated parts, so other faults are cleared before anything is touched.

Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never budge are freed next, by a cleaning fluid put through the access port on that car, which expands inside the filter. A second pass is sometimes called for on badly clogged filters.

Next, a regeneration clears everything the clean lifted. That is a monitored drive out of Portishead if you are along, or a static regeneration where the car stands, with the running data checked afterwards.

Both sets of figures go over by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second scan is what proves the change, puts out the light and logs whatever is still showing.

The faults a DPF clean cannot answer

One thing is what a clean answers — a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does little for:

  • sensors, pressure or temperature, showing a blockage that is not real
  • a failed EGR valve
  • a failure in the AdBlue system
  • failed glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever runs
  • a turbo pushing oil through the filter

Which is why the diagnostic goes first. You are warned before all work gets going, not after you have handed over, if it turns out to be one of those.

DPF renewal is what people search for, but no part is replaced: the filter you have is cleared where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it cut out a fix, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes illegal. Two more things worth noting.

What DPF cleaning runs to in Portishead

Each visit carries a call-out charge — travelling to you, setting up the booking, doing the check and offering the advice. The clean itself begins from £299.

The number is settled over the phone, once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. No flat rate could be honest. The car moves it, and so does the location — Portishead, Dry Hill, or somewhere farther out in the BS postcode area.

You are not asked to pay for a clean that the diagnostic says will not work. You even so pay that charge: someone travelled, did the diagnostic and offered you the advice.

Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer heads back to Portishead.

On-site DPF cleaning at a vehicle across Portishead

Really helpful on the phone call, didn't have to wait long for an appointment with the engineer, then engineer was great.

Paul D.

Turned up as arranged and investigated the problem including running diagnostics. Turns out dpf was ok. Very helpful in pin pointing the problem.

Dave B.

Very friendly polite operative who arrived on time messaged me to say he was here. Told me there wasn't a fault with the DPF so there would be no charge gave me a few suggestions on what it might be so will check those out. Thanks Chris.

What we clean, and how far we go near Portishead

Whatever it is — car, panel van, light commercial, HGV, plant, construction machinery, agricultural vehicle — the one call-out service stands, and the filter never quits it.

Nearly every week there is already someone on Wyndham Way, so Portishead rarely means a journey of its own, and Dry Hill, West Hill and the villages past Sheepway follow. Coverage runs UK-wide, so even further out across Somerset is nonetheless worth a ring, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the diary rather than the distance.

What Portishead drivers wonder about DPF cleaning

Can I just take it for a long drive?
If you spot it in time, and the car is not in limp mode, sometimes. Ten minutes to Waitrose and back will not be enough; motorway speed, kept for a while, will.
Broadly how long does it take?
It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily blocked filter can require a second clean, which extends that.
What does it run to around Portishead?
Treatment starts from £299, and the call-out charge on top pays for the visit, the scan and the advice. Settling it is done by phone, since what you drive and where you sit both move the figure.
Have I got to be present?
No. The car needs a spot to sit for a couple of hours; you do not need to stand with it. The regeneration can be carried out as a watched drive if you would prefer to ride along.
How soon can someone get to Portishead?
That hangs on the schedule, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ring 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what is available across the BS area.
Is the filter taken off the car?
It is done where it is, on the call-out service. We never get filters off or put them back on, whichever way.
And if the light reappears?
An engineer heads back out to Portishead — the 30-day warranty takes in aftercare.
