Porterhouse, Derbyshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning
The car stays put — call-out DPF cleaning comes to it. The technician pulls up at your address over in Porterhouse and sets up. The diesel particulate filter is cleared on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration follows, and you hold on to the filter you came with.
The visit runs typically around 2 hours, the clean starts from £299, and the figure is settled on the phone before anyone travels.
Written for the situation most drivers are in: the light already on, the car short for power, and the visit still to arrange.
The DPF light is on. What then?
Not the unit, necessarily. First thing to note. That light can arise from several faults, not just one, so the visit starts with a scan and not with a clean.
How the vehicle is handled in the meantime makes a difference too.
- Amber light, motor still driving normally — a long constant run can still shift it on its own. Costs nothing at all, and worth a try before you call anything.
- That window has closed once the motor has fallen into limp mode. A drive will not help now.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it looked at.
The car has been telling you already
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been building for weeks:
- going uphill, the power falls off
- revs that will not pull the way they always did
- worse fuel economy
- stop/start quietly giving up
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
That is not conclusive alone. It is a fair assumption the filter is full once the light is on as well.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near Porterhouse
Porterhouse is a residential suburb, and the day-to-day driving that comes with one is the least kind type for a DPF. The school run to Ripley St John's Church of England Primary School and Nursery, Calke Rise at a standstill at the morning rush, ten minutes to The Co-operative Food, the dash to Langley Mill — none of it lasts long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. The soot that should clear banks up instead.
Neither is far from Porterhouse: under 5 miles to the M1, under 10 miles to Derby. Neither is on the way to anything most weeks, though, so the run that would clear a filter hardly ever gets made.
Why limp mode prevents a DPF regeneration
Limp mode is the car looking after itself. The entire catch is that a long drive works by setting off a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not climb and power is capped.
The usual advice — run it up the motorway — is good, up until it is not. Once the car is in limp mode you are beyond that point, and the filter wants cleaning rather than road work.
On-site DPF cleaning where the motor stands round Porterhouse
Nothing leaves the motor. That surprises people. The DPF stays fitted where it is and the work goes on around it, on a forecourt, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for two hours or so.
Nothing is started until other faults are ruled out. That involves a diagnostic first: real-time data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by actual weight, and a review of the sensor readings, glow plugs and related components.
Then the cleaning. A cleaning fluid goes in through the access port on that car and opens out inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never move. Severely loaded filters sometimes require a second pass.
Next, a regeneration burns off everything the clean lifted. Ride along with the vehicle and it is done as a monitored drive out of Porterhouse. Park it and the regeneration is done on the spot, with running data verified once it is done.
Finally the scan runs again — the change proven, the light cleared, anything still outstanding logged. Both read-outs arrive with you by email, so the numbers are on record.
What a DPF clean will not fix
A filter clogged with soot and ash is the one thing a clean answers. It will not touch:
- the wrong signal from a pressure or temperature sensor
- an EGR valve held open
- an AdBlue system failure
- failed glow plugs or injectors, so no regeneration ever starts
- oil coming through the filter from a faulty turbo
Which is why the diagnostic comes first. When one of those proves the fault, you learn of it in advance rather than once the money has left altogether.
Two things more worth noting. Getting the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your original filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
DPF cleaning charges around Porterhouse
A call-out charge stands whatever the outcome, and covers the visit, the booking fee, the scan and the advice given. Treatment itself starts from £299.
The number is settled on the phone, once we know the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. No flat rate could be honest. Two things shift it: what you own, and where you are — Porterhouse itself, out at Nuttals Park, or farther out in the DE postcode area.
Where the check says a clean will not work, you are not asked to pay for a clean. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone travelled, did the check and passed on you the advice.
A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the job, and that includes an engineer travelling back out to Porterhouse if the light comes back inside the period.
Thomas was great, explained everything to me so I understood and got my car back on the road. Really informative and gave good advice.
Very happy with the service that was provided! Nic was efficient and knowledgeable. He seemed very honest and I am back motoring again after 75% blockage! Thank you!!
Diagnosed my engine. Didn't need the clean. Gave me a diagnostic report and did not rip me off. I felt completely satisfied with the information given. Callum was polite, helpful and respectful. Good representative for the company.
Where we travel around Porterhouse, and what we clean
Whatever it is — private car, panel van, light commercial, HGV, plant, construction machinery, agricultural vehicle — the same call-out service applies, and the filter never leaves it.
Porterhouse is seldom a special trip: technicians are out on Calke Rise week in week out, and the same run covers Nuttals Park, Greenhillocks and the spots out past Ripley. Call anyway from further out through Derbyshire. Coverage extends UK-wide, and the day you are given comes down to the schedule rather than how far away you are.

Things Porterhouse drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Will a long drive shift it?
- It may, provided you spot it in time and limp mode has not set in. Ten minutes to The Co-operative Food and back will not be enough; motorway speed, held for a stretch, will.
- Does the visit last long?
- It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily clogged filter can need a second clean, which lengthens that.
- Around Porterhouse, what does it run to?
- It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge paying for the visit, the diagnostic and the advice. Both the vehicle and where you are move it, which is why quoting goes by phone.
- Is it necessary for me to be around?
- You do not need to stand with it — the motor just requires space to stand for a couple of hours. If you would sooner come along, the regeneration can be done as a monitored drive instead.
- Can someone travel to Porterhouse soon?
- Depending on the schedule, often same-day or next-day is usual. Phone 0303 330 1830 what is free across the DE area.
- Does the filter leave the car?
- On the call-out service, no: the filter is cleaned in place. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not work we do.
- The light reappears — then what?
- Aftercare comes inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Porterhouse.
