The DPF light is on. What then?
It might not be the filter at all. That is the opening thing. A check happens before all treatment, because that same dash light has a number of possible faults behind it.

What the car has been showing you
The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have generally been growing for a while:
- power falling off, particularly climbing uphill
- you notice the revs fall short of where they used to go
- economy that is worse than before
- stop/start quietly packing in
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. The light with them points at a loaded filter.

The driving that comes with a coastal village like Port Charlotte is the poorest type for a DPF. None of it runs long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, An-Creagan Place crawling at the morning rush, a few minutes to the local shops, the dash to the nearest station. The soot that should burn off builds up instead.
Geography does not oblige either. The M8 is over 50 miles from Port Charlotte and Derry is over 50 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way regularly, whole weeks go by without the long unbroken run that might clear the filter by itself.

What limp mode amounts to is the motor protecting itself. A sustained drive works by starting a regeneration, and that is exactly what limp mode prevents: power capped, revs held down, no regeneration available.
