First thing: it is not necessarily the filter. That light can arise from a number of faults, not only one, so the visit starts with a diagnostic and not with a clean.

- A long even run may even now be enough, provided the light is amber and the vehicle drives normally. Costs zero, so have a go at that before ringing.

Before the light, what the car was showing you
Symptoms have usually been growing for a while before the light even arrives. Late news, in other words:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- worse fuel economy
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears
On its own, none of that is proof. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
What clogs diesel particulate filters around Porcupine
Being a rural hamlet, Porcupine throws up precisely the use a DPF handles least well. The school run to Tywardreath School, Pontsmill Road at a crawl at half eight, five minutes to Co-op Food, the run to Par — not one bit of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. A cleaning solution after that is injected through the entry point on that motor, spreading inside the filter to lift soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never shift. Badly clogged filters sometimes take a second pass.

- a pressure or temperature sensor showing a restriction that is not there
- a stuck-open EGR valve

- the turbo putting oil into the filter

Two things more worth noting. Getting the filter cut out is not a fix — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your own filter is treated in place and sent back into use.
