What the car has been showing you
Late news, the light. The symptoms usually build for a while before it appears:
- pulling uphill, the power drops away
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before

- the stop/start without a word bowing out
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. Next to the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is loaded.
