Plain Street, Cornwall: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With on-site DPF cleaning, we travel to the motor. The engineer turns up at your door across Plain Street and gets to work. The diesel particulate filter is cleaned still on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration comes next, and you keep the filter you came with.
The visit takes typically around 2 hours, the clean opens from £299, and the price is fixed by the phone before anyone leaves.
The light is showing and the car is low on power — that is how we generally come across people, and precisely what this page is about.
DPF light on? What to do
The unit is not automatically what is at fault, and that leads. That light can arise from several faults, not only one, so the visit opens with a scan and not with treatment.
Second thing: how you handle it between now and then counts.
- A long steady run may still do it, provided the light is amber and the vehicle goes as normal. Costs nothing, so try that before booking.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, motoring will not reach it. The window has gone.
- Stop booking long drives and get it checked if the interior stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you press on.
What the vehicle has been telling you
Late news, the light. The symptoms usually grow for a while before it appears:
- dropping away on power, especially uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before
- worse fuel consumption
- quietly, the stop/start packs in
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under acceleration
By itself, none of that is evidence. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is there too.
The reason diesel particulate filters choke near Plain Street
Being a coastal area, Plain Street produces precisely the motoring a DPF copes with the poorest. A regeneration wants the time and heat, and gets not much: not on the school run to St Minver School, not on B3314 at half eight, not on a few minutes to Co-op Food, and not on the hop to Roche. The soot banks up rather than clearing.
Where you sit does not oblige either. The M5 is over 50 miles from Plain Street and Truro is under 25 miles away, so unless something carries you out that way regularly, entire weeks slip past without the long unbroken run that would clear the filter by itself.
DPF regeneration, and the stage limp mode kills it
The vehicle is protecting itself, which is what limp mode is. Output is limited, the revs will not climb, and the regeneration the filter wants can never complete — which is the real problem, because a proper drive works by setting off that regeneration.
Sound advice, that motorway run — until the moment it is not. The far side of that point — limp mode — road work will not be enough, and the filter wants cleaning.
DPF cleaning at the vehicle round Plain Street
Most owners do not anticipate this bit: the filter stays put. The job happens with the DPF yet bolted to the vehicle — on your drive, in a work car park, wherever the motor can stand for a couple of hours.
Nothing is started until other faults are eliminated. That means a check first: live data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by mass, and a check of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated parts.
After that comes the clean itself: solution in through the motor's own entry point, opening out inside the filter and loosening what a regeneration will not. Where the filter is badly loaded, expect a second pass.
Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean freed. That is a monitored drive out of Plain Street if you are there, or a static regeneration where the car stands, with the real-time data read once done.
A second check proves the change, puts out the warning light and lists anything still outstanding. Both reports are emailed, so you end up with the before and after figures on record.
Where cleaning is not the fix
One thing is what a clean answers — a filter choked with soot and ash. It does no good for:
- the wrong figure from a temperature sensor
- a stuck-open EGR valve
- AdBlue system problems
- failed glow plugs or injectors, so not one regeneration ever starts
- turbo trouble, with oil reaching the filter
Which is why the diagnostic goes first. You are let know before any work gets going, not after you have handed over, where it turns out to be one of those.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no solution. What gets looked up as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your filter is cleared in place and goes back into service.
The price for DPF cleaning across Plain Street
The treatment starts from £299. A call-out charge covers every visit, and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the diagnostic and the advice that follows.
Quoting a flat rate would not be honest. We fix it on the phone, once the motor and its expected needs are known. A pair of things shift it: what you run, and where you are — Plain Street itself, over at Trelights, or otherwise out within the PL postcode area.
Treatment that will not work is not a clean you pay for, and the scan is what says so. Because the visit, the scan and the advice have happened, the call-out charge even so stands.
A 30-day warranty includes aftercare on the clean, and that includes an engineer travelling back out to Plain Street if the light returns inside the window.

Where we reach round Plain Street, and what we clean
Private cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, construction and plant machinery, agricultural machinery — one mobile service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is treated on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.
Our engineers are along B3314 week in week out, so Plain Street is rarely a detour, and the same run covers Trelights, Trevanger and the places out past St Minver. Coverage runs UK-wide, so farther out across Cornwall is even so worth a call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

What Plain Street drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Can I merely take it for a long drive?
- Soon enough, and with the motor out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. It takes a sustained run at motorway speed, not five minutes to Co-op Food and back.
- The visit lasts how long?
- Count on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean lengthening that where the filter is severely clogged.
- Around Plain Street, what does it cost?
- The call-out charge takes in the visit, the scan and the advice; cleaning itself opens from £299. Quoting is done by phone, since what you run and where you are both change the number.
- Must I be present in person?
- Space for the car to wait, for a couple of hours, is all that is needed. Not you. Preferring to be there is no problem: the regeneration then runs out on the open road, monitored.
- Travelling to Plain Street — how soon?
- That depends on the calendar, but it is often same-day or next-day. Call 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what is open across the PL area.
- Will the filter be lifted off?
- Treated where it sits, on this service, so no. Getting a filter off or bolting one back on come to anything a job we do either way.
- The light returns — then what?
- Aftercare falls inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Plain Street.
