- Get it seen to rather than running it — diesel in the car, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.
The vehicle has been warning you already
Symptoms have generally been building for some time before the light ever shows. Last news, in other words:
- less power, above all going uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they used to
- fuel consumption going worse
- stop/start quietly bowing out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box
By itself, none of that is proof. Next to the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
Clogged diesel particulate filters around Pike Law, and the reason
For a DPF, the least kind driving is the sort you meet across a small village such as Pike Law. Then the treatment. A solution is fed in through the access port on that car and opens out inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never budge. Severely clogged filters sometimes take a second pass.

Finding that out is the first check's whole job. You are warned before all work gets going, not after you have settled up, should it turns out to be one of those.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter hollowed out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no remedy. What gets looked up as DPF renewal swaps nothing: your filter is cleaned in place and goes back into work.
