The light is last news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been building for weeks:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- you find the revs fall short of where they used to go
- fuel consumption turning worse
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in there
By itself, none of that is conclusive. With the light beside them, the filter is a fair bet.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round Perry Barr
