Pennan, Aberdeenshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With call-out DPF cleaning, we drive out to the car. No garage, no filter coming off. A technician drives out to your place in Pennan, treats the diesel particulate filter where it is, runs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you arrived with.
The visit runs typically around 2 hours, the clean opens from £299, and the price is fixed on the phone before anyone sets off.
If the light is already on and the vehicle is down on power, this page is for you. That is how most drivers get to us.
The DPF light is on. What now?
Not the unit, automatically. Opening thing to say. Cleaning is not where a visit opens. A check is — several faults register as the same signal.
Second thing: how you drive it between now and then counts.
- Amber light, car still driving fine — a long even run can even now clear it by itself. Costs zero, and worth attempting before you ring anything.
- Car already gone into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not reach it now.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under the throttle — stop planning long drives and get it looked at.
Before the light, what the motor was warning you
Last news, the light. The symptoms usually mount for some time before it arrives:
- power dropping away, particularly pulling uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they once did
- fuel use turning worse
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is there too.
Clogged diesel particulate filters near Pennan, and the cause
For a DPF, the poorest use is the kind you find in a coastal village such as Pennan. A regeneration wants the time and heat, and gets not much: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on B9031 at half past eight, not on five minutes to Spar, and not on the run to the nearest station. The soot that should burn off banks up instead.
Neither is distant from Pennan: over 50 miles to the M90, under 50 miles to Aberdeen. Neither is on the way to much most weeks, though, so the run that would scour a filter never gets made.
The point a DPF regeneration can no longer run
The car is looking after itself, which is what limp mode means. The whole difficulty is that a proper drive works by triggering a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not pull and power is capped.
So the common advice to take it up the motorway is good advice, right until the day it is not. Once the motor is in limp mode you are beyond that line, and the filter requires a clean rather than more driving.
The vehicle stays where it is for on-site DPF cleaning across Pennan
On your front, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can stand for a couple of hours: the job takes place with the filter even now bolted on, which is the bit most people do not anticipate.
Nothing is cleaned until other faults are ruled out. That requires a check first: real-time data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by actual weight, and a look over of the sensor readings, glow plugs and connected components.
Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never shift are lifted second, by a cleaning fluid put through the entry point on that vehicle, which expands inside the filter. Heavily blocked filters sometimes take a second pass.
A regeneration is next, burning off what the clean has loosened. That is a monitored drive out of Pennan if you are along, or a static regeneration where the motor sits, with the live data read afterwards.
A second diagnostic confirms the change, puts out the warning light and logs anything still outstanding. Both reports are sent over, so you keep the before and after figures to hand.
What a DPF clean will not fix
Only one fault is answered by cleaning: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:
- sensors, pressure or temperature, showing a restriction that is not real
- a stuck-open EGR valve
- a failure in the AdBlue system
- glow plugs or injectors preventing the regeneration starting in the first place
- a turbo putting oil through the filter
The first diagnostic is there for precisely that. If one of those turns out to be the fault, you find out about it at the outset rather than once the money has left for good.
DPF renewal is what people search for, but no part is replaced: the filter you already own is treated where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it hollowed out a solution, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth knowing.
Costs for DPF cleaning across Pennan
A call-out charge holds whatever the outcome, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the check and the advice passed on. Cleaning itself begins from £299.
Once we are told what you drive, and roughly what the filter will want, the number gets settled by phone. A single price for all would not be straight. The car shifts it, and so does the address — Pennan, Crovie, or somewhere otherwise out in the AB postcode area.
Where the scan says a clean will not do it, you are not charged for a clean. What nonetheless applies is the call-out charge, since the visit was made, the diagnostic was done and the advice was given.
A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the work, and that includes an engineer coming back out to Pennan if the light comes back inside the time.
Ash was great. Super friendly and equipped with plenty of knowledge. Glad he got sent to help my car out!
The dpf fixer mechanic notified me of his impending arrival, carried out the clean, readings and regeneration; and explained the process. Very pleasant and informative.
Daz was knowledgeable and friendly he explained exactly what he was doing and the process involved and within 45mins my dpf was clear and my vehicle was back running smoothly. 10 out of 10 very pleased.
Vehicles we clean, and where we get to near Pennan
One on-site service spans cars, vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant machinery and agricultural machinery, and on every one the filter is done in place rather than moved anywhere.
Nearly every week there is by then someone on B9031, so Pennan rarely means a detour, and Crovie, Seatown and the spots past Gardenstown follow. Further out through Aberdeenshire is even so worth ringing about — coverage runs UK-wide, and it is the diary rather than the distance that settles between one day and the next.

What Pennan drivers want to know about DPF cleaning
- Can I just take it for a long drive?
- Quickly enough, and with the vehicle out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. That means motorway speed for a steady stretch, rather than a short trip to Spar.
- The visit takes how long?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly blocked filter can take cleaning twice, which runs on.
- Across Pennan, what does it come to?
- A clean opens from £299, and the call-out charge on top takes in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice. The vehicle and your address both move the number, so we settle it on the phone.
- Do I have to be present?
- The vehicle requires a space for two hours or so. You do not need to be in it. The regeneration can be done as a monitored drive if you would sooner be there.
- Coming to Pennan — how soon?
- You are offered often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is currently in the schedule. Phone 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what is free across the AB area.
- Is the filter taken off the car?
- Cleaned where it is, on this service, so no. We do not lift filters off or fit them back on, in either direction.
- What if the light returns?
- An engineer comes back out to Pennan — the 30-day warranty covers aftercare.
