Before the light, what the vehicle was telling you
Symptoms have generally been building for weeks before the light so much as arrives. Late news, in other words:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- fuel consumption getting worse
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
None of that is conclusive alone. With the light with them, the filter is a fair guess.
What chokes diesel particulate filters near Pendine
Being a coastal village, Pendine throws up precisely the motoring a DPF copes with least well. The school run to the local primary school, Pendine Hill at a halt at the morning rush, a few minutes to The Co-operative Food, the dash to Whitland — nothing of it goes on long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. The filter does not leave it. That is the bit most drivers do not anticipate: the job takes place with the DPF still fixed to the car, on your front, in a work car park, wherever the motor can sit for a few hours.
The ECU is taken first, showing soot load by proportion and by actual weight, along with a check of sensors, glow plugs and connected components, so nothing is touched while another fault is still possible.
A cleaning fluid next goes in through the access point on that car, opening out inside the filter to loosen soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never move. Severely clogged filters sometimes require a second pass.

- a pressure or temperature sensor reporting a blockage that is not there
- the EGR valve jammed open
- the AdBlue system going wrong
- a regeneration that hardly ever runs, because of glow plugs or injectors
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter

Two things more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter cut out is not a fix — a vehicle without a functioning DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is cleared in place and sent back into use.
