The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been growing for some time:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- you see the revs fall short of where they once went
- the fuel use is down
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in there
