- going uphill, the power drops away
- you find the revs stop short of where they once went
- fuel economy getting worse
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- the car stinking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
None of that is proof by itself. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
