Mobile DPF Cleaning across Old Town and Fife

Call-out DPF cleaning comes to the motor. A technician arrives at your address in Old Town, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the vehicle, performs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you started with.

You'll know a price by phone before anyone leaves, the clean starting from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.

The light is showing and the vehicle is low on power — that is how we generally come across people, and what this page deals with.

What to check when the DPF light shows

The unit is not necessarily what is wrong, and that comes first. Plenty of faults put the very same light on the identical panel, which is why a visit begins with a diagnostic rather than with a clean.

How the vehicle is handled in the meantime makes a difference too.

  • Motor still driving normally on an amber light — try a long even run first. It costs zero and often sorts the filter without assistance.
  • Once the vehicle is in limp mode, driving will not touch it. The window has closed.
  • Get it looked at rather than running it — diesel in the car, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.

What the motor has been warning you

Last news, the light. The symptoms generally build for weeks before it arrives:

  • falling off on power, particularly uphill
  • you see the revs fall short of where they always went
  • the fuel use is worse
  • the stop/start without a word bowing out
  • smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside

That is not conclusive on its own. The light with them suggests a blocked filter.

The reason diesel particulate filters block round Old Town

The day-to-day driving that goes with a residential suburb like Old Town is the worst sort for a DPF. The school run to the local primary school, Barony Place at a crawl at the morning rush, ten minutes to Scotmid, the run to Markinch — nothing of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. What should clear stays put.

Except when you have a regular cause to head out to the M90, under 10 miles from Old Town, or across to Dunfermline under 15 miles away, whole weeks pass without a sustained drive. Geography is against you.

The stage a DPF regeneration can no longer happen

What limp mode means is the car looking after itself. Output is held down, the revs will not pull, and the regeneration the filter wants can no longer happen — which is the whole difficulty, because a long drive works by starting that regeneration.

The usual advice — get it up the motorway — is sensible, until it is not. Beyond that point — limp mode — more driving will not manage it, and the filter requires cleaning.

Call-out DPF cleaning where the vehicle stands across Old Town

Most people do not anticipate this part: the filter remains. The job happens with the DPF still fixed to the vehicle — on your front, in a work car park, any place the motor can stand for a while.

A scan goes first — live data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by weight, and a look over of the sensor readings, glow plugs and associated components, so other faults are cleared before a thing is cleaned.

Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never budge are freed after that, by a solution fed through the access port on that car, which opens out inside the filter. Where the filter is badly loaded, plan on a second pass.

A regeneration comes next, burning off what the clean has freed. Either it is done as a monitored drive out of Old Town, with you there, or it goes where the motor stands and the running data is verified afterwards.

Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change confirmed, the light cleared, anything still open logged. Both reports reach you by email, so the numbers are kept.

The failures a DPF clean cannot cure

A clean fixes one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does little for:

  • the wrong figure from a pressure or temperature sensor
  • the EGR valve stuck open
  • an AdBlue system failure
  • faulty glow plugs or injectors, so no regeneration ever completes
  • a turbo pushing oil through the filter

Which is why the scan happens first. Transpiring to be one of them means hearing it before the work begins, not after handing over anything.

Gutting the filter out is not a fix: without a working DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the term people look up, though nothing is swapped — your own filter is cleared in place and sent back into use. Two more worth knowing.

The price of DPF cleaning across Old Town

The cleaning begins from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that follows.

No flat rate would be straight, so the figure is agreed over the phone once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. Two separate things shift it: what you own, and where you are — Old Town itself, out at Whinnyknowe, or further out across the KY postcode area.

If the scan counts a clean out, there is no charge to pay for it. You still pay that charge: someone travelled, did the scan and offered you the advice.

Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer heads back to Old Town.

Vehicles we clean, and where we get to round Old Town

One mobile service covers cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is cleaned on the vehicle rather than moved anywhere.

Most weeks there is already someone on Barony Place, so Old Town hardly ever means a special trip, and Whinnyknowe, Newcastle and the villages past Leslie come with it. It is the diary, not the distance, that picks whether it is today or tomorrow, and coverage extends UK-wide — so ring anyway from farther out through Fife.

Frequent questions on DPF cleaning around Old Town

Does a long run clear it?
Sometimes, if you spot it early and the vehicle has not fallen into limp mode. A sustained run at motorway speed is what it wants — not five minutes or so to Scotmid and back.
How long does the visit last?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly loaded filter can need cleaning twice, which takes longer.
How much does it come to in Old Town?
Starting from £299, with a charge for travelling that covers the diagnostic and advice on what to do next. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both change the number.
Do I have to be around?
You need not stand with it — the car just needs somewhere to stand for a couple of hours. Wanting to be there is fine: the regeneration then is done out on the road, monitored.
Can someone travel to Old Town soon?
That hangs on the calendar, but it is often same-day or next-day. Phone 0303 330 1830 and we will say to you what is free across the KY area.
Will the filter be removed?
On the call-out service, no: the filter is cleaned in place. Neither job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not something we do.
What if the light reappears?
Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer coming back to Old Town.
