Old Town, Durham: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With call-out DPF cleaning, we come to the motor. A fitter arrives at your place across Old Town, clears the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the motor, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.
You'll know a number by phone before anyone leaves, the clean beginning from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.
Written for the situation most owners are in: the light already on, the vehicle short for power, and the clean still to arrange.
What to try when the DPF light comes on
It could not be the filter whatsoever. That is the opening thing. A clean is not where a visit opens. A scan is — a number of faults register as the same signal.
How the vehicle is run in the meantime counts too.
- Motor still driving fine on an amber light — attempt a long constant run first. It costs nothing at all and often shifts the filter without a visit.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has now gone.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it seen to.
Signs the vehicle has been showing you
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been deteriorating for a while. It is last news:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- the fuel economy is down
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. It is a fair bet the filter is full once the light is on as well.
What chokes diesel particulate filters around Old Town
Being a residential suburb, Old Town throws up precisely the motoring a DPF handles worst. A regeneration wants long enough and heat, and has not much: not on the school run to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Hartlepool, not on Chandlers Close at the morning rush, not on a few minutes to Asda, and not on the hop to Hartlepool. Soot that should burn off builds up instead.
Neither is far from Old Town: under 15 miles to the A1(M), under 25 miles to Durham. Neither is on the way to much most weeks, though, so the drive that would clear a filter never gets made.
The moment a DPF regeneration can no longer happen
Limp mode is the vehicle looking after itself. With output capped and the revs pinned, the regeneration the filter requires will not run at all. That matters, because setting off one is exactly what a long run does.
So the usual advice to get it up the motorway is good advice, right until it stops being. In limp mode you are past that point: cleaning is what will work, not more road work.
The motor stays where it is for mobile DPF cleaning in Old Town
Most people do not see coming this part: the filter stays on. The job is done with the DPF still fitted to the motor — on your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the car can stand for a couple of hours.
First a check. Running ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a figure, the sensor readings, the glow plugs, the associated hardware — all of it taken before a thing is touched.
A solution next is injected through the access port on that car, spreading inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. Severely loaded filters sometimes take a second pass.
Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has freed. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of Old Town; if not, in place where the motor sits, with the running data read once done.
Finally the check runs again — the change proven, the light cleared, anything still outstanding noted. Both reports arrive with you by email, so the numbers are on record.
What a DPF clean will not touch
A filter choked with soot and ash is the one thing a clean answers. It will not touch:
- sensors, pressure or temperature, flagging a restriction that is not real
- the EGR valve held open
- the AdBlue system playing up
- glow plugs or injectors preventing the regeneration starting at all
- oil working through the filter from a worn turbo
That is what the first scan is for. When it proves to be one of those, you are let know before any work begins rather than after you have paid anything.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter hollowed out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no fix. What gets searched for as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your filter is treated in place and goes back into work.
DPF cleaning costs across Old Town
Each visit takes a call-out charge — getting to you, taking the booking, running the diagnostic and passing on the advice. The clean itself begins from £299.
Once we know what you own, and broadly what the filter will need, the price gets fixed by phone. A single price for everyone would not be truthful. The vehicle changes it, and so does the address — Old Town, Middleton, or somewhere otherwise out in the TS postcode area.
If the scan writes cleaning out, there is nothing to pay for it. Because the visit, the diagnostic and the advice have happened, the call-out charge still holds.
If the light reappears inside that time, an engineer heads back out to Old Town — the work carries a 30-day warranty including aftercare.
Jason the engineer was prompt, professional and addressed the issue with my Mercedes to my satisfaction. Very pleased with the overall service received. Thanks Steve.
Daniel did a great job and my truck was back up and running super quick! Arrived on time and very happy!
Logan came out and talked me through everything. He ran a thorough check and concluded that I didn't need a clean, explained everything and then spent time with me talking me through what to do. Could have easily done an unnecessary clean and charged me. Mind at ease.
Vehicles we clean, and where we get to round Old Town
One mobile service takes in private cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant and construction machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is cleaned on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.
Most weeks there is already someone on Chandlers Close, so Old Town rarely means a detour, and Middleton, Longhill and the villages past Hartlepool are on the way. Ring anyway from further out around Durham. Coverage reaches UK-wide, and the day you get depends on the schedule rather than how far away you are.

What Old Town drivers wonder about DPF cleaning
- Does a long run clear it?
- If you get it early, and the car is not in limp mode, sometimes. That requires motorway speed for a steady run, rather than a short trip to Asda.
- Does the visit run long?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly loaded filter can take cleaning twice, which adds time.
- Across Old Town, what does it run to?
- The call-out charge pays for the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; the clean itself begins from £299. We settle it on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both shift the number.
- Is it essential for me to be present?
- The car needs a spot for two hours or so. Nobody expects you to be in it. Ride along if you like, and the regeneration is done as a watched drive.
- Travelling to Old Town — how soon?
- That comes down to the diary, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ring 0303 330 1830 what is available across the TS area.
- The filter — does it come away from the motor?
- It is cleaned where it sits, on the call-out service. Taking a filter off or putting one back on count as anything something we do in either direction.
- What if the light returns?
- Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Old Town.
