Mobile DPF Cleaner

Old Town, City of Edinburgh: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The motor sits in place — on-site DPF cleaning travels to it. The fitter arrives at your door over in Old Town and sets up. The diesel particulate filter is cleared still on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration follows, and you hold on to the filter you came with.

Nobody travels until the price is settled by the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean starts from £299.

Written for the state most drivers are in: the light showing, the car short for power, and the job still to arrange.

DPF light on? What happens next

The filter is not necessarily what is wrong, and that leads. A clean is not where a visit begins. A diagnostic is — a number of faults register as the same signal.

The driving you manage in the meantime matters. That is the second thing.

  • Worth a shot before you ring anything: amber light, motor driving normally, just one steady run, no charge.
  • Vehicle already dropped into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not touch it now.
  • Get it checked rather than running it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.

Before the light, what the vehicle was telling you

Late news, the light. The symptoms usually mount for some time before it shows:

  • going uphill, the power drops away
  • an engine whose revs will not rise as they should
  • worse fuel consumption
  • stop/start silently giving up
  • diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gears

None of that is proof by itself. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair bet.

Clogged diesel particulate filters around Old Town, and the why

Being a residential suburb, Old Town produces just the use a DPF manages least well. A regeneration wants the time and heat, and gets none: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on Castlehill at the morning rush, not on ten minutes to Maqbool's Supermarket, and not on the dash to Edinburgh Waverley. Instead of burning away, the unburnt soot builds up.

Neither is far from Old Town: under 5 miles to the M8, under a mile to Edinburgh. Neither is on the way to much most weeks, though, so the run that would empty a filter never happens.

The point a DPF regeneration can no longer run

What limp mode amounts to is the motor defending itself. Power is capped, the revs will not rise, and the regeneration the filter requires can never complete — which is the entire catch, because a long drive works by starting that regeneration.

Good advice, that motorway run — right up until the point it is not. Once the car is in limp mode you are past that point, and the filter requires a clean rather than road work.

On-site DPF cleaning where the vehicle stands across Old Town

The filter does not budge. That is the detail most drivers do not expect: the job takes place with the DPF yet bolted to the motor, on your front, in a work car park, anywhere the car can stand for a few hours.

The ECU is taken first, showing soot load by proportion and by mass, along with a look over of sensor readings, glow plugs and connected parts, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still in play.

Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never move are loosened second, by a solution passed through the access port on that motor, which spreads inside the filter. A second pass is sometimes required on badly loaded filters.

Then a regeneration, to drive off what the clean has lifted. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Old Town; if not, in place where the vehicle stands, with the running data verified once done.

Both read-outs come through by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second check is what verifies the change, puts out the light and notes whatever is still showing.

What a DPF clean will not cure

Cleaning answers one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does no good for:

  • temperature or pressure sensors flagging a restriction that is not there
  • a failed EGR valve
  • a failure in the AdBlue system
  • failed glow plugs or injectors, so not one regeneration ever starts
  • a turbo pushing oil through the filter

Which is why the check happens first. You are warned before any work starts, not after you have settled up, where it turns out to be one of those.

Two more worth noting. Leaving the filter cut out is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is treated in place and sent back into use.

What DPF cleaning costs across Old Town

The clean opens from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the diagnostic and the advice that goes with it.

Publishing a flat rate would not be honest. We agree it by phone, once the car and its probable needs are clear. Two separate things move it: what you own, and where you are — Old Town itself, out at Roxburghs Court, or otherwise out across the EH postcode area.

If the diagnostic counts treatment out, there is nothing to pay for it. Because the visit, the check and the advice have happened, the call-out charge nonetheless applies.

The job comes with a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer coming back out to Old Town if the light comes back inside that time.

What we clean, and how far we reach around Old Town

The one on-site service spans cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is cleaned where it sits rather than taken anywhere.

Old Town is rarely a special trip: technicians are out on Castlehill most weeks, and the same run covers Roxburghs Court, New Town and the spots out past Danderhall. It is the calendar, not the distance, that decides whether it is this day or the next, and coverage extends UK-wide — so phone anyway from farther out across City of Edinburgh.

What Old Town drivers want to know about DPF cleaning

Will a long drive clear it?
If you get it in time, and the motor is not in limp mode, sometimes. A long run at motorway speed is what it needs — not five minutes flat to Maqbool's Supermarket and back.
The visit takes how long?
Plan on typically around 2 hours — badly loaded filters sometimes need a second pass, which adds to it.
Cost across Old Town — what is it?
It begins from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the scan and the advice. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both move the number.
Must I be there in person?
You need not stand with it — the car just requires a spot to stand for a couple of hours. The regeneration can be run as a monitored drive if you would sooner be there.
Coming to Old Town — how soon?
It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the diary. Phone 0303 330 1830 and we will let you what is available across the EH area.
Does the filter come away from the vehicle?
On the call-out service, no: the filter is treated in place. We do not lift filters off or bolt them back on, whichever way.
What if the light reappears?
Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to Old Town.
