Old Brigg, Norfolk: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Sorting the DPF takes place at the motor, not at a garage. No garage, no filter going anywhere. An engineer drives out to your place across Old Brigg, treats the diesel particulate filter where it is, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you came with.

The visit runs typically around 2 hours, the clean starts from £299, and the figure is fixed by the phone before anyone sets off.

The light is already on and the vehicle is short of power — that is how we usually meet people, and roughly what this page is about.

DPF light on? What comes next

First thing: it is not automatically the filter. That light can arise from a number of faults, not only one, so the visit opens with a check and not with a clean.

Second thing: how you handle it between now and then matters.

  • Amber light, vehicle still driving normally — a long even run can yet shift it on its own. Costs zero, and worth a try before you ring anything.
  • That window has shut once the motor has slipped into limp mode. Motoring will not help now.
  • Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under the throttle — stop arranging long drives and get it checked.

The car has been telling you already

The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been growing for some time:

  • less power, particularly pulling uphill
  • the revs no longer pull the way they always did
  • worse fuel use
  • stop/start quietly packing in
  • the interior reeking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away

That is not proof by itself. It is a fair guess the filter is full once the light is showing too.

Choked diesel particulate filters near Old Brigg, and the why

Being an area, Old Brigg throws up precisely the motoring a DPF handles the poorest. The school run to St Mary's Community Primary School, Beetley, Church Lane at a halt at half eight, five minutes to Co-op Daily, the dash to the nearest station — not one bit of it goes on long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. Instead of burning away, the unburnt soot collects.

Neither is far from Old Brigg: under 50 miles to the M11, under 25 miles to Norwich. Neither is on the way to much most weeks, though, so the journey that would empty a filter never gets made.

The moment a DPF regeneration can no longer happen

Limp mode is the car looking after itself. The entire problem is that a proper drive works by triggering a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not rise and power is limited.

Taking it up the motorway is the standard advice, and it stands right up to a limit. The filter needs cleaning rather than more driving once the vehicle has slipped into limp mode.

The clogged filter cleaned after a warning light in Old Brigg, Norfolk

The car stays put for call-out DPF cleaning round Old Brigg

On your front, in a work car park, any place the motor can sit for a few hours: the job happens with the filter even now fixed on, which is the bit most owners do not see coming.

The ECU is read first, giving soot load by proportion and by weight, along with a check of sensors, glow plugs and related hardware, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still open.

Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never move are loosened second, by a cleaning fluid passed through the entry point on that vehicle, which expands inside the filter. Where the filter is severely blocked, expect a second pass.

Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean loosened. That is a monitored drive out of Old Brigg if you are present, or a static regeneration where the car waits, with the running data checked afterwards.

A second diagnostic verifies the change, puts out the warning light and notes anything still open. Both sets of figures are emailed over, so you end up with the before and after figures to hand.

What a DPF clean will not cure

Only one fault is answered by treatment: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:

  • sensors, pressure or temperature, flagging a restriction that is not real
  • the EGR valve jammed open
  • AdBlue system problems
  • injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration running in the first place
  • turbo problems, with oil getting into the filter

The first diagnostic is there for precisely that. You are warned before the work begins, not after you have settled up, where it turns out to be one of those.

DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is replaced: the filter you already own is cleared where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it gutted a fix, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes illegal. Two more things worth bearing in mind.

Prices for DPF cleaning in Old Brigg

A clean begins from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it pays for the call-out, the booking, the scans and the advice.

The price is settled on the phone, once we have the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. No flat rate could be honest. What you drive and where you are both move it: Old Brigg itself, out at Sparrow Green, or further out within the NR postcode area.

A clean that will not work is not treatment you pay for, and the diagnostic is what says so. Because the visit, the check and the advice have been done, the call-out charge nonetheless stands.

A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the work, and that includes an engineer travelling back out to Old Brigg if the light comes back inside the window.

Where we reach near Old Brigg, and what we clean

One call-out service covers cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is done where it sits rather than moved anywhere.

Nearly every week there is by then someone on Church Lane, so Old Brigg hardly ever means a special trip, and Sparrow Green, Bushy Common and the spots past Beetley are on the way. Coverage is UK-wide, so further out around Norfolk is still worth a call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the diary rather than the distance.

Things Old Brigg drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Is a long drive enough on its own?
It can, provided you catch it in time and limp mode has not arrived. Five minutes to Co-op Daily and back will not be enough; motorway speed, sustained for some time, will.
Does the visit take long?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a severely clogged filter can need cleaning twice, which takes longer.
How much does it cost across Old Brigg?
Starting from £299, with a charge for coming out that pays for the check and advice on what to do next. Both the vehicle and where you are shift it, which is why pricing happens by phone.
Have I have to be present?
You do not need to stand with it — the car only wants a spot to sit for a couple of hours. Preferring to be there is fine: the regeneration then runs out on the road, monitored.
How soon can someone travel to Old Brigg?
That comes down to the calendar, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ring 0303 330 1830 what is free across the NR area.
Will the filter be lifted off?
It is done where it stands, on the call-out service. That work — a filter off, a filter back on — is not something we do.
Suppose the light returns?
Aftercare comes inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Old Brigg.
