By the time the light shows, things have usually been going wrong for weeks. It is last news:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they always did

- silently, the stop/start bows out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is showing too.
Why diesel particulate filters block round Oake
