Your DPF light is on — what then?
First thing: it is not always the filter. A scan goes before any work, because that same panel light has several possible faults behind it.
Second thing: how you handle it between now and then counts.
- Motor still driving fine on an amber light — have a go at a long steady run first. It costs nothing and regularly sorts the filter without assistance.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has by then shut.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under the throttle — stop booking long drives and get it looked at.
Signs the car has been showing you
By the time the light appears, things have generally been deteriorating for weeks. It is belated news:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- you notice the revs stop short of where they always went
- fuel use going worse
- stop/start without a word giving up
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
That is not conclusive on its own. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is there too.
Blocked diesel particulate filters round Nostie, and the why
Nostie is a rural hamlet, and the day-to-day driving that goes with one is the worst type for a DPF. The school run to the local primary school, A87 at a halt at the morning rush, a few minutes to Co-op Food, the run to Duncraig — none of it lasts long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. Most drivers do not see coming this bit: the filter stays on. The job is done with the DPF even now fixed to the car — on your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the car can wait for a couple of hours.
Nothing is cleaned until other faults are cleared. That means a check first: running data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by mass, and a look over of the sensor readings, glow plugs and associated hardware.
Then comes the clean itself: a cleaning solution in through the car's own entry point, opening out inside the filter and lifting what a regeneration cannot. Heavily clogged filters sometimes need a second pass.
Then a regeneration, to clear what the clean has lifted. Come with the car and it turns into a monitored drive out of Nostie. Park it and the regeneration is done on the spot, with real-time data read once it is done.

When a DPF clean is not the fix
One thing is what treatment fixes — a filter choked with soot and ash. It does little for:
- the wrong figure from a pressure or temperature sensor
- an EGR valve held open
- an AdBlue system fault
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so not one regeneration ever runs
- turbo failure, with oil reaching the filter
The first check is there for exactly that. When one of those turns out to be the fault, you hear about it up front rather than once the money has changed hands for good.
Hollowing the filter out is not a remedy: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is against the law. DPF renewal is the term people search for, though nothing is exchanged — your own filter is cleaned in place and put back into use. Two more worth knowing.
