First thing: it is not necessarily the DPF. A diagnostic happens before all treatment, because that same dashboard light has plenty of candidate faults behind it.
Second thing: how you handle it between now and then counts.
- A long constant run may still do it, provided the light is amber and the car goes normally. Costs nothing, so have a go at that before booking.
- That window has gone once the vehicle has fallen into limp mode. A drive will not help now.
- A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under the throttle, is the moment to stop booking long drives and call.
Signs the car has been sending you
Late news, the light. The symptoms tend to grow for weeks before it appears:
- falling off on power, particularly uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- fuel use that is worse than it was
- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
That is not proof alone. With the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is blocked.
The cause diesel particulate filters clog round Northwold
For a DPF, the poorest use is the kind you find around a village such as Northwold.
