The vehicle has been telling you already
The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have generally been building for weeks:
- going uphill, the power tails off
- you see the revs never reach where they once went
- fuel consumption getting worse
- the stop/start silently giving up
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is full.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round Northiam
The driving that comes with a rural village like Northiam is the least kind type for a DPF.
