Northgrain, Durham: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Cleaning the DPF is done at the car, not at a workshop. An engineer turns up at your door across Northgrain, treats the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the motor, performs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you came with.
Nobody leaves until the price is fixed over the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.
Written for the position most owners are in: the light already on, the car starved for power, and the job still to fix.
The DPF light is on. What next?
Not the DPF, automatically. Opening thing to say. That light can follow plenty of faults, not just one, so the visit starts with a scan and not with a clean.
Second thing: how you run it between now and then matters.
- A long steady run may even now manage it, provided the light is amber and the car goes fine. Costs zero, so attempt that before ringing.
- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has already shut.
- Get it seen to rather than using it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on the throttle, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
The motor has been showing you already
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been deteriorating for some time. It is last news:
- dropping away on power, particularly uphill
- you find the revs never reach where they always went
- fuel use that is worse than it used to be
- stop/start silently giving up
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under acceleration
None of that is conclusive on its own. Next to the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.
Why diesel particulate filters block round Northgrain
The day-to-day driving that belongs to a rural hamlet like Northgrain is the worst type for a DPF. Look at a typical week: Wearhead Primary School and back, B6295 at a standstill before the hour, a quick trip to the local shops, a hop to the nearest station. None of it there goes on long enough or is hot enough to finish a regeneration. The unburnt soot builds up rather than clearing.
The map does not help either. The M6 is under 25 miles from Northgrain and Durham is under 50 miles away, so unless something carries you out that way often, weeks slip past without the sustained run that would empty the filter on its own.
DPF regeneration, and the moment limp mode kills it
What limp mode comes down to is the motor looking after itself. A proper drive works by triggering a regeneration, and that is precisely what limp mode prevents: power held down, revs pinned, no regeneration available.
Running it up the motorway is the common advice, and it holds right up to a line. Beyond that line — limp mode — more driving will not do it, and the filter wants cleaning.
Where the vehicle stands is where the DPF is treated across Northgrain
Most drivers do not expect this part: the filter stays put. The job happens with the DPF even now fitted to the vehicle — on your front, in a work car park, anywhere the motor can sit for a couple of hours.
First a check. Live ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a weight, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the related hardware — all of it taken before a thing is touched.
Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never move are lifted next, by a cleaning fluid passed through the access point on that car, which expands inside the filter. Heavily blocked filters sometimes require a second pass.
What the clean has loosened is then burned off by a regeneration. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of Northgrain; if not, on the spot where the motor waits, with the running data verified after.
Both reports come through by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second check is what confirms the change, puts out the light and notes whatever is still open.
When a DPF clean is not the fix
One thing is what cleaning fixes — a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does no good for:
- pressure sensors showing a restriction that is not there
- the EGR valve jammed open
- AdBlue system faults
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration completing in the first place
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter
That is what the first diagnostic is for. If it proves to be one of those, you are let know before any work gets going rather than after you have settled up a penny.
A couple more worth bearing in mind. Getting the filter cut out is not a fix — a vehicle without a working DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and returned into use.
DPF cleaning prices around Northgrain
Cleaning starts from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it covers the call-out, the booking, the diagnostics and the advice.
The price is settled on the phone, once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. No flat rate could be honest. What you run and where you are both shift it: Northgrain itself, over at Cowshill, or otherwise out in the DL postcode area.
A clean that will not work is not cleaning you pay for, and the diagnostic is what says so. Because the visit, the scan and the advice have taken place, the call-out charge still stands.
If the light reappears inside that period, an engineer travels back out to Northgrain — the clean carries a 30-day warranty covering aftercare.
They service was really good and I really liked how they explained everything to me so that I made sense to me as well.
10/10 experience. I called, got someone out the next day. Nat came and was friendly, efficient and did a great job!
Very happy with the service that was provided! Nic was efficient and knowledgeable. He seemed very honest and I am back motoring again after 75% blockage! Thank you!!
Where we get to around Northgrain, and what we clean
The filter is treated where it sits on all of them: cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant and construction machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is moved anywhere.
Week in week out there is already someone on B6295, so Northgrain rarely means a journey of its own, and Cowshill, Heatherycleugh and the villages past Ireshopeburn follow. Coverage is UK-wide, so further out across Durham is nonetheless worth a phone call, and what settles between today and tomorrow is the diary rather than the distance.

Things Northgrain drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Can I simply take it for a long drive?
- Quickly enough, and with the car out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. Ten minutes to the local shops and back will not do it; motorway speed, held for a stretch, will.
- How long does the visit run?
- Allow typically around 2 hours — severely loaded filters sometimes take a second pass, which lengthens it.
- Across Northgrain, what does it cost?
- Starting from £299, with a charge for travelling that pays for the check and advice on what to do next. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both move the figure.
- Must I be around in person?
- Somewhere for the car to stand, for a couple of hours, is all that is wanted. Not you. Choosing to be there is no problem: the regeneration then is done out on the road, monitored.
- Coming to Northgrain — how soon?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is currently in the calendar. Ring 0303 330 1830 and you will know what is free across the DL area.
- Does the filter come off the motor?
- Not on the call-out service — it is treated where it stands. Getting a filter off or bolting one back on come to anything something we do whichever way.
- And if the light reappears?
- An engineer travels back out to Northgrain — the 30-day warranty covers aftercare.
